THE HOUSING PROJECT

 

In March 2019, Africa and the Southern hemisphere encountered the intense tropical cyclone Idai, which was dubbed the worst tropical cyclone on record. The long lived storm which ran rampant through the entire month of March, caused catastrophic damage in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Specifically, three days of rain and this cyclone hit the communities ADC serves on March 5 to 7, 2019 and it left damaged and collapsed houses to the tune of 335.

In light of such disaster and suffering, ADC endeavored to assist as many of the people affected by the cyclone’s distraction as possible. As such, ADC promptly assisted displaced families by provide temporary shelter in form of plastics sheets, ply wood, timber and other building materials which assisted over 34 families in Thanganyika and the surrounding villages.

The homes of over 335 families, in Thanganyika village, sustained irreparable damage, leaving the families homeless and in desperate need for a place of refuge, and accordingly resorted to seeking assistance and shelter from neighbours and nearby schools.

ADC has grouped its resources together and approached various donors in an endeavor raise funds to rebuild the homes of the displaced families. At present, we have built 35 houses, and the plan is to build 100 houses, of which priority is given to child headed households, children being cared for by the grandparents and families who care for multiple orphaned and vulnerable children.

ADC seeks to raise sufficient capital to rebuild the remaining homes targeting 100 first then of assess the situation before continuing.  After the first cyclone the village has experienced two more cyclones that have caused havoc as well.  It takes $10,000 to build one house and so plan to build a house for a household. We are also assisting these families improve Agriculture and a concept paper can be provided by those who need it.
